New play equipment in the park

Thank you to everyone for your patience while the works on the sports field were carried out to install the new play equipment; the installation is now complete and only the final landscaping remains, when the surrounding area will be seeded so the grass can regrow — we appreciate your understanding during the disruption and look forward to seeing families and children enjoy the refreshed space once the turf has established.

The highlight of the update is the multi level, open ended climbing frame that features multiple tree-top-inspired obstacles at varying heights—such as a net tunnel crossing, zigzag rope balance traverse, and wobbly logs—which help children develop holistically across physical, cognitive, and social-emotional domains.

The second new equipment is a 4-Way Spring Seesaw  - a multi-user playground rocker specifically engineered to support early childhood development. Designed for up to four children simultaneously, this equipment combines dynamic physical movement with social play to build key skills.

Please see some details from the supplier’s website below how the climbing frame and the seesaw actively support a child's development:

Physical Development

  • Gross & Fine Motor Skills: Navigating between thick timber logs and thin, reinforced ropes requires children to use large muscle groups for climbing (gross motor) while practicing tight gripping and grasping techniques (fine motor).

  • Balance & Proprioception: Moving across unsteady obstacles like the Swinging Log Crossing or Wobbly Log Traverse forces children to constantly adjust their center of gravity. This significantly improves balance, core stability, and proprioception (the body’s subconscious awareness of its position in space).

  • Upper & Lower Body Strength: Pulling themselves up rope traverses and scaling the integrated climbing wall builds upper arm, shoulder, and grip strength, while stepping between logs reinforces lower body power.

Cognitive & Mental Development

  • Problem Solving & Spatial Awareness: The circuit acts like a giant physical puzzle. Children must judge distances, assess spatial constraints, and map out their next physical steps, choosing which rock or rope to utilize to their advantage.

  • Building Resilience & Confidence: Because the structure offers challenges at multiple heights, children can practice "safe risk-taking". They can build up their climbing confidence on lower-level obstacles before pushing their boundaries on higher elements.

Social & Creative Development

  • Imaginative Play: The tree-top adventure aesthetic naturally sparks creative playground games. Children use the structure as a focal point to transport themselves into imaginary worlds (e.g., crossing a "shaky ladder" over "hot lava").

  • Communication & Turn-Taking: The open-ended design features numerous entry and exit points, meaning an entire class can play simultaneously without overcrowding or queuing. This layout fosters natural social hubs where children learn to cooperate, negotiate pathways, share space, and communicate effectively with their peers.

The Parrot 4-Way Spring Seesaw

Physical Development & Motor Skills

  • Balance & Coordination: As the springer bobs, tilts, and rocks unpredictably in multiple directions, children must constantly adjust their weight to stay upright. This directly improves vestibular system regulation and full-body spatial awareness.

  • Core Strength: Stabilising oneself against the multi-directional spring tension forces children to engage their abdominal, back, and pelvic muscles, laying a foundation for general physical fitness.

  • Grip & Upper Body Strength: Gripping the integrated safety handholds and pressing against the footrests helps younger children develop hand strength and lower limb stability.

Social & Emotional Growth

  • Cooperative Play: Unlike a traditional solo spring rider, a 4-way seesaw requires children to react to each other’s weight and movements. They must work together, shift their weight in unison, and negotiate the rhythm of the bounce to keep the motion going.

  • Communication Skills: Because their movements affect the other three riders, children naturally communicate—using both verbal cues and body language—to sync their rocking patterns.

Cognitive & Sensory Expansion

  • Imaginative Play: The bright, tropical theme featuring grey parrot seats and yellow plant-ons serves as a catalyst for creative thinking. Children use the visual anchors to transform a playground visit into an imaginative game, such as flying through a jungle.

  • Cause-and-Effect Reasoning: By feeling how a heavy bounce on one side impacts the rider on the opposite side, children naturally experiment with non-verbal reasoning and the basic principles of gravity, leverage, and physics.

The Parish Council wishes all families many happy hours on the new play equipment and warmly encourages everyone to treat it with care so it will remain safe and enjoyable for years to come. Please respect the surroundings, follow any safety guidance, and report any damage promptly — a little attention from us all will keep the space welcoming for the whole community.
